I know from checking with your 6th grade teachers that you are familiar with a basic plot structure: exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution.
This pattern can help you make predictions as you read more stories. The basic roller coaster or plot mountain that contained the above parts is a basic pattern that most stories can fit.
(See this refresher on plot and story elements if you are not remembering those elements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffAOkGg2Lr4)
One more specific type of story pattern that can help us make predictions is the hero's journey. Understanding this pattern can be the key to unlocking many popular movie and book plots! We are going to explore a graphic organizer that shows us the parts of the hero's journey, watch a video showing us the concept with popular examples, and read a traditional myth to see if we can apply the concept.
Step One: Import the following image into Notability. You can screenshot the Hero's Journey Wheel below or click the jpeg file to import it into Notability. If you are not getting the message to import it from this website, go to Notability, make a new note, and then import a screenshot of the wheel.

Step Two: Use your own headphones or the headphones in the white drawers near the iPads to watch the 5 minute video "What Makes a Hero?" by Matthew Winkler.
*Record examples mentioned in the animated video on your Hero's Journey Wheel to help you understand the concept. This doesn't have to be perfect- it's a starting point.

Step Three: Import the following PDF copy of "The Hero's Test" into Notability. Please do this so you can highlight as you go and annotate like we have been practicing!
If we have technical difficulties, or you prefer a physical copy, the story can be found beginning on page 26 of our green books in the back of the room.
