Formative and Summative Assessments.
Two types of assessments are used in 7th grade Communication Arts.
Formative assessments are checks along the way to see if students are grasping the material being taught. These check-ins help tell the student and the teacher what they did well and what they can still work on in order to succeed. I can change my teaching to provide remediation or enrichment based on the feedback these formative assessments give me. These are not graded. We will have one formative assessment that will be entered into the gradebook for each learning goal that we teach. These are similar to traditional quizzes. The grades will be entered in as a P (proficient), S(satisfactory), or U (unsatisfactory). This gives the teachers as well as the students and parents an idea of how well the students understand the different learning goals. If a student earns a "P", they are proficient in the skill/concept and should be ready for the summative. If a student earns an "S", their performance was satisfactory, but they need to study more or receive more help. A student who earns a "U" needs to see me for remediation and extra help before the summative. Formative assessments provide practice and learning experiences, so students can show their full potential in the summative assessments.
The second type of assessments are summative. These are like tests and should measure the "sum" of their learning. They are given at the end of instruction of a learning goal. They will be graded using points. Students will have a clear idea of the assignment's expectations through the practice in the formatives. Summative assessments may include writing assignments, performance tasks (project type),and reading-related tasks.
