Coordinate Adjective Commas:
Coordinate Adjective, Coordinate Adjective Noun.
Cumulative vs. Coordinate: Coordinate adjectives need a comma; cumulative adjectives do not. Remember cumulative adjectives work together, so you wouldn't want a comma separating them, such as
The old redwood tree stood tall.
Coordinate Adjectives: If two adjectives modify a noun in the same way, place a comma between the two adjectives.
Checklist:
(1) Can you replace the comma with the word and?
(2) Can you reverse the order of the adjectives and keep the same meaning?
(3) If you can do both, then you have coordinate adjectives! Place a comma between those adjectives.
Non-Examples:
We have a tough, football team.
( No comma needed. We have a football and tough team does not make sense. )
The cold, December wind chilled me to my bones.
( No comma needed. Cold describes the December wind. Plus, “ The December and cold wind…” does not make sense. )
Color Coded Examples:
Blue = coordinate adjective commas Black= noun being described
The sweet, delicious aroma of cinnamon buns filled the air.
It was a bright, sunny day.
The pianist played a beautiful, haunting melody.
