Coordinate Adjective Commas:
Coordinate Adjective , Coordinate Adjective Noun.
Cumulative vs. Coordinate: Coordinate adjectives need a comma; cumulative adjectives do not. Remember cumulative adjectives work together, so you wouldn't want a comma separating them,such as The old redwood tree stood tall.
Coordinate Adjectives: If two adjectives modify a noun in the same way, place a comma between the two adjectives.
Checklist:
( 1 ) Can you replace the comma with the word and?
( 2 ) Can you reverse the order of the adjectives and keep the same meaning?
( 3 ) If you can do both, then you have coordinate adjectives.
Non-Examples:
We have a tough, football team.
( No comma needed. We have a football and tough team does not make sense. )
The cold, December wind chilled me to my bones.
( No comma needed. Cold describes the December wind. Plus, “ The December and cold wind…” does not make sense. )
Correct Examples:
The sweet, delicious aroma of cinnamon buns filled the air.
It was a bright, sunny day.
The pianist played a beautiful, haunting melody.
For Harry Potter, potions class is usually a painful, difficult experience.
His messy, unruly hair covers his lightning-shaped scar.
Harry Potter wants to be a a fierce, courageous Auror when he grows up.
