TED Talk-
Seven Element Assignment—Final Project: Ecology Unit
Assignment Summary and Rationale: “Wildlife is something which man cannot construct. Once it is gone, it is gone forever. Man can rebuild a pyramid, but he can’t rebuild ecology, or a giraffe.” -Joy Adamson
“Because human populations are growing so fast, animals and plants are disappearing 1000 times faster than they have in the past 65 million years. Scientists estimate that in the 21st century 100 species will become extinct every day” (Natural and Human Impacts on Wildlife).
These issues are growing, and there is little knowledge in our society. Ted Talks are reaching millions of people across the nation and the world. In this open forum, kids to adults have shared problems just like the ones facing our environment right now. However, there is still a need to make our society aware of the issues facing wildlife, nature, and ultimately us! You have been chosen to make a Ted Talk to educate our society on the issues we are facing with nature today.
Writer’s Purpose: Your purpose is to show America and other Ted Talk viewers the problems nature is facing, how to face them, and the effects. You will need to use pictures and words to convey a strong message to your audience in order to make them agree with your perspective.
Writer’s Role: You have been chosen to share a problem nature and our society is facing today through a Ted Talk to reach the most people. Share the effects of the problem and a solution for your viewers. Make your viewers aware!
Audience: Your Ted Talk audience and the world! We will be filming these in class and posting to a class Youtube account.
Form: You will need to create a Google Presentation, Keynote, Haiku Deck, or a Prezi that has at least 6 slides. The first slide must include a strong quote, fact, or anecdote that illustrates the environmental problem you are choosing. Then you need 5 more slides that contain pictures, captions, and bibliographies (if needed). All of the pictures should relate to and help build the overall understanding of your chosen problem and possible solution.
Procedure:
Step 1: Determine your claim—What is the environmental problem, and what are some solutions?
Step 2: Decide what your sources (at least two!) will be for your research-based presentation. Sources are credible and included to create the most effective argument.
Step 3: Find a strong quote, fact, or anecdote that illustrates the environmental problem you are choosing. Remember that TED talks start with a hook to draw you in.
Step 4: Complete the two graphic organizers to help plan your slides and the information you will share during your speech.
Step 5: Find pictures and create your Google Presentation or Prezi. Include bibliographies and captions. Step 6: Create notecards for your speech and practice.
Due Date: (individual presentation dates to be assigned)
