Subject/Predicate Schoolhouse Rock Intro/Review:
|
|
1. Import the "ConventionsWS" into Notability.
2. We will take the following notes. You may copy paste, type, or write with a stylus. We will gather our own examples and non-examples to add as we move forward with our learning.
Why do we need grammar and conventions when we write?
A complete sentence has....
1. A complete thought
2. A subject (do-er) 3. a verb (action) * You can also think of a simple sentence as an independent clause because it can stand alone. |
Four Step Formula:
1. Identify the verb (the predicate).
2. Identify the do-er (simple subject). 3. Is it a complete thought? (Is there any information missing?) 4. Is it a sentence? Yes or no? |
Examples of complete sentences:
He ran.
Stop!
It was raining.
She skipped down the trail.
Non-examples
1. That moment where you realize you're wrong. (What about that moment? Incomplete thought/fragment).
2. Because it was raining. (incomplete thought/fragment)
3. Many people love the fall season, it is a break from the summer heat. (run-on)
2. Because it was raining. (incomplete thought/fragment)
3. Many people love the fall season, it is a break from the summer heat. (run-on)
