Rationale:
We will be using the development of students’ understanding of the relationship between humanity and nature in order to develop critical reading, listening, and speaking skills. Students will engage in deep reading of multimedia and other mentor texts, while honing their understanding of what it means to be an interesting and effective writer. The theme of the relationship between nature and humanity (ecology) allows students an entry point into texts that naturally employ charged opinion and distinct purpose to persuade. Conventions/Grammar instruction will be integrated into daily Bell Ringers where mentor excerpts are used to model and teach a specific concept for students to practice and use in their daily writing. Reading comprehension will be developed through a variety of non-fiction texts and student-searched resources from our databases.
Unit Essential Question:
* How do interact with and impact our world, and how can the environment impact us?
